Geological Map of the Maltese Islands - Folds
EnvironmentThe Folds theme provides information on the structural bedrock geology of the Maltese islands. It was produced from the geological resurvey of the Maltese Islands undertaken in 2021 and 2022. This map depict localised structural folding of bedrock. The map features represent the fold axis of the feature. -
Ground Water Body Malta
EnvironmentThis dataset represents the mean sea level and perched groundwater bodies of the Maltese islands. -
Groundwater and Surface Water Bodies monitoring Stations for the WFD
EnvironmentThis dataset represents the WFD monitoring stations for the purpose of status assessment in groundwater and surface water bodies -
Groundwater Monitoring Network
EnvironmentLocation of Groundwater Monitoring Network forming part of the Operational Groundwater Monitoring Network as part of the Water Framework Directive -

Landscape protection regions
EnvironmentThis dataset consists of part of the Strategic Proposals and Marine Objectives as published in the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development (SPED). It shows the classification of the landscape into Areas of Landscape Protection and Areas of High Landscape Protection. The data is to be considered as strategic and for indicative purposes only. It should not be used for direct interpretation. -
Location of Continuous Air Monitoring Stations for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
EnvironmentThis layer indicates the location of the air monitoring station for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons as requested by Directive 2004/107/EC -
Location of quarries in the Maltese Islands - Hardstone and Softstone
EnvironmentLocation of Hardstone and Softstone Licenced quarries in the Maltese islands -
Location of Sewage Treatment Plants
EnvironmentThe area covered by the sewage treatment plants per GPS coordinates. Agglomerations data is included as attributes to this layer. -
Maltese Agglomeration, Maltese Zone and PAHs Zone
EnvironmentAccording to the requirements of Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC with respect to the minimum number of sampling points and the assessment regimes, the data set consists of two zones in the Maltese territory, the Air Monitoring Agglomeration and the Air Quality Monitoring Zone in which all main pollutants are being monitored. A third zone covering the monitoring of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) is also included in the data set. -
MSFD Descriptor 1 and 6: BENTIX, CARLIT and PREI
EnvironmentThis dataset includes results for the BENTIX, CARLIT and PREI indices. Such data was collected under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive. -
MSFD Descriptor 1 and 6: Lithophyllum
EnvironmentThis dataset describes location and area cover for Lithophyllum bissoides platforms along the Maltese coast. Such data was collected under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive. -
MSFD Descriptor 1 and 6: Maerl
EnvironmentThis dataset includes data for % cover of rhodoliths located in the NE of Malta. Such data was collected under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive. -
MSFD Descriptor 1: Phytoplankton and Zooplankton Species Composition
EnvironmentThe information gathered is part of Descriptor 1 of Commission Decision 2017/848/EU: specifically D1C6 (pelagic habitats). Plankton communities constitute an important component of such water column habitats, forming the base of marine foodwebs. The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment. In fact, this dataset includes a list of phytoplankton and zooplankton up to the lowest possible taxonomic scale and includes a count of abundance. -
MSFD Descriptor 1: Phytoplankton Habitat Condition
EnvironmentThe information gathered is part of Descriptor 1 of Commission Decision 2017/848/EU: specifically D1C6 (pelagic habitats). Phytoplankton communities constitute an important component of such water column habitats, forming the base of marine foodwebs. The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment. Surface chlorophyll-a levels can also be used to characterise pelagic habitats in oceanic waters of the Mediterranean Sea, on the basis of the importance of productivity in describing marine ecosystems and food availability. This dataset includes quantitative information including the density of phytoplankton in cells/l, chlorophyll-a in ug/l and the diatom/dinoflagellate ratio. -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Bunkering Areas
EnvironmentBoundaries of offshore bunkering areas and relocated waiting area for vessels. Activities within these zones are regulated through various legislation: Authority for Transport in Malta Act (Chapter 499 of the Laws of Malta) Ports and Shipping Act (Chapter 352 of the Laws of Malta), Dangerous Cargo Ships, Marine Terminals and Facilities and Bunkering Regulations (S. L. 499.12), Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Reporting Requirements Regulations (S. L. 499.34) Berthage and Anchorage Dues Regulations (S. L. 499.38), Berthing Regulations (S. L. 10.30), and Official Nautical Charts. -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Offshore Exploratory Oil Wells
EnvironmentThe location of offshore exploratory oil wells, as provided by the Continental Shelf Department for Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC) reporting purposes. -
MSFD Descriptor 8: Contaminants in Posidonia oceanica
EnvironmentThis dataset includes the concentration of contaminants in sediment and Posidonia in marine waters as monitored under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive.
