  • Location of submerged and partially submerged marine caves along the...

In December 2015, DFA gathered first hand data from diving schools in Malta and Gozo on the location of submerged and partially submerged marine caves along the coastline of the Maltese Islands, as part of the LIFE+ Benthic Habitat Research for Marine Natura 2000 Site Designation (LIFE BaĦAR for N2K) purpose of the project. This data was funded by of one of the co-financed EU LIFE+ Funding Programmes - LIFE BaĦAR for N2K project.
  • Major Roads for Noise Directive

This layer shows the major roads defined for Malta according to the requirements of Directive 2002/49/EC relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise. These are the roads for which strategic noise maps are produced.
  • Maltese Agglomeration, Maltese Zone and PAHs Zone

According to the requirements of Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC with respect to the minimum number of sampling points and the assessment regimes, the data set consists of two zones in the Maltese territory, the Air Monitoring Agglomeration and the Air Quality Monitoring Zone in which all main pollutants are being monitored. A third zone covering the monitoring of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) is also included in the data set.
  • Marine area up to 25nm as covered by SPED

This dataset consists of the Maltese Islands maritime boundary of 25 nautical miles, which represents the outer limit of the coverage of the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development (SPED).
  • Marine facilities

This dataset consists of part of the Strategic Proposals and Marine Objectives as published in the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development (SPED). It shows the locations of Spoil Ground, Bunkering areas and Aquaculture zones.
  • Material and Social Deprivation (MSD) rate

Material and Social Deprivation refers to the proportion/number of people who are unable to afford some items considered by most people to be desirable or even necessary to lead an adequate life. The Material and Social Deprivation indicators are based on 13 items: 7 household items and 6 personal items. HOUSEHOLD ITEMS: face unexpected expenses; afford one-week annual holiday away from home; avoid arrears (in mortgage, rent, utility bills and/or hire purchase instalments); afford a meal with meat, chicken or fish or vegetarian equivalent every second day; afford keeping their home appropriately warm; have access to a car/van for personal use; replace worn-out furniture. PERSONAL ITEMS: replace worn-out clothes with some new ones; have two pairs of properly fitting shoes; spend a small amount of money each week on him/herself (“pocket money”); have regular leisure activities; get together with friends/family for a drink/meal at least once a month; have an internet connection. Persons lacking at least five items out of the 13 material and social deprivation items are considered to be materially and socially deprived (MSD).
  • MSFD Descriptor 1 and 6: BENTIX, CARLIT and PREI

This dataset includes results for the BENTIX, CARLIT and PREI indices. Such data was collected under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive.
  • MSFD Descriptor 1 and 6: Lithophyllum

This dataset describes location and area cover for Lithophyllum bissoides platforms along the Maltese coast. Such data was collected under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive.
  • MSFD Descriptor 1 and 6: Maerl

This dataset includes data for % cover of rhodoliths located in the NE of Malta. Such data was collected under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive.
  • MSFD Descriptor 1: Phytoplankton and Zooplankton Species Composition

The information gathered is part of Descriptor 1 of Commission Decision 2017/848/EU: specifically D1C6 (pelagic habitats). Plankton communities constitute an important component of such water column habitats, forming the base of marine foodwebs. The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment. In fact, this dataset includes a list of phytoplankton and zooplankton up to the lowest possible taxonomic scale and includes a count of abundance.
  • MSFD Descriptor 1: Phytoplankton Habitat Condition

The information gathered is part of Descriptor 1 of Commission Decision 2017/848/EU: specifically D1C6 (pelagic habitats). Phytoplankton communities constitute an important component of such water column habitats, forming the base of marine foodwebs. The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment. Surface chlorophyll-a levels can also be used to characterise pelagic habitats in oceanic waters of the Mediterranean Sea, on the basis of the importance of productivity in describing marine ecosystems and food availability. This dataset includes quantitative information including the density of phytoplankton in cells/l, chlorophyll-a in ug/l and the diatom/dinoflagellate ratio.
  • MSFD Descriptor 6: Anchoring and Mooring Hotspots

Indicative areas used for anchoring and mooring of vessels around the Maltese islands. The data was used in the assessment of MSFD descriptor D6C2 (physical disturbance to the seabed)
  • MSFD Descriptor 6: Bunkering Areas

Boundaries of offshore bunkering areas and relocated waiting area for vessels. Activities within these zones are regulated through various legislation: Authority for Transport in Malta Act (Chapter 499 of the Laws of Malta) Ports and Shipping Act (Chapter 352 of the Laws of Malta), Dangerous Cargo Ships, Marine Terminals and Facilities and Bunkering Regulations (S. L. 499.12), Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Reporting Requirements Regulations (S. L. 499.34) Berthage and Anchorage Dues Regulations (S. L. 499.38), Berthing Regulations (S. L. 10.30), and Official Nautical Charts.
  • MSFD Descriptor 6: Offshore Exploratory Oil Wells

The location of offshore exploratory oil wells, as provided by the Continental Shelf Department for Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC) reporting purposes.
