Malta European geostatistical 1km grid
Reġjuni u BlietThis dataset series contains geographical grids of 1km grid cell size for Malta. The main attributes are a Grid ID coding the East and North coordinate of the lower left corner of each grid cell plus the hierarchy level plus the quad-tree level. And the INSPIREID of the lower grid cell corner. The grid has been created following the requirements of COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 1089/2010 of 23 November 2010 implementing Directive 2007/2/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards interoperability of spatial data sets and services and the INSPIRE Specification on Geographical Grid Systems - Guidelines. The grid can be used to represent all kinds of statistical and scientific values. The main application is the representation of demographic data (population). This 1km grid was provided by the Eurostat European Commission -
Maltese Agglomeration, Maltese Zone and PAHs Zone
AmbjentAccording to the requirements of Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC with respect to the minimum number of sampling points and the assessment regimes, the data set consists of two zones in the Maltese territory, the Air Monitoring Agglomeration and the Air Quality Monitoring Zone in which all main pollutants are being monitored. A third zone covering the monitoring of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) is also included in the data set. -

MSFD Descriptor 1 and 6: BENTIX, CARLIT and PREI
AmbjentThis dataset includes results for the BENTIX, CARLIT and PREI indices. Such data was collected under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive. -
MSFD Descriptor 1 and 6: Lithophyllum
AmbjentThis dataset describes location and area cover for Lithophyllum bissoides platforms along the Maltese coast. Such data was collected under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive. -
MSFD Descriptor 1 and 6: Maerl
AmbjentThis dataset includes data for % cover of rhodoliths located in the NE of Malta. Such data was collected under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive. -
MSFD Descriptor 1: Phytoplankton and Zooplankton Species Composition
AmbjentThe information gathered is part of Descriptor 1 of Commission Decision 2017/848/EU: specifically D1C6 (pelagic habitats). Plankton communities constitute an important component of such water column habitats, forming the base of marine foodwebs. The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment. In fact, this dataset includes a list of phytoplankton and zooplankton up to the lowest possible taxonomic scale and includes a count of abundance. -
MSFD Descriptor 1: Phytoplankton Habitat Condition
AmbjentThe information gathered is part of Descriptor 1 of Commission Decision 2017/848/EU: specifically D1C6 (pelagic habitats). Phytoplankton communities constitute an important component of such water column habitats, forming the base of marine foodwebs. The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment. Surface chlorophyll-a levels can also be used to characterise pelagic habitats in oceanic waters of the Mediterranean Sea, on the basis of the importance of productivity in describing marine ecosystems and food availability. This dataset includes quantitative information including the density of phytoplankton in cells/l, chlorophyll-a in ug/l and the diatom/dinoflagellate ratio. -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Anchoring and Mooring Hotspots
Agrikoltura, Sajd, Forestrija u IkelIndicative areas used for anchoring and mooring of vessels around the Maltese islands. The data was used in the assessment of MSFD descriptor D6C2 (physical disturbance to the seabed) -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Bunkering Areas
AmbjentBoundaries of offshore bunkering areas and relocated waiting area for vessels. Activities within these zones are regulated through various legislation: Authority for Transport in Malta Act (Chapter 499 of the Laws of Malta) Ports and Shipping Act (Chapter 352 of the Laws of Malta), Dangerous Cargo Ships, Marine Terminals and Facilities and Bunkering Regulations (S. L. 499.12), Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Reporting Requirements Regulations (S. L. 499.34) Berthage and Anchorage Dues Regulations (S. L. 499.38), Berthing Regulations (S. L. 10.30), and Official Nautical Charts. -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Offshore Exploratory Oil Wells
AmbjentThe location of offshore exploratory oil wells, as provided by the Continental Shelf Department for Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC) reporting purposes. -
MSFD Descriptor 6: Offshore Spoil Ground
The dataset indicates the location of the designated spoil ground, where disposal of dredged material and inert uncontaminated geological material at sea takes place. Malta has one ‘offshore’ spoil ground located in the North Eastern part of Maltese waters. -
MSFD Descriptor 7: Desalination RO Plants
AmbjentThe dataset includes the location of desalination plants across the Maltese Islands. There are three main desalination plants: Cirkewwa Reverse Osmosis plant, Pembroke Reverse Osmosis plant and Lapsi Reverse Osmosis plant. -
MSFD Descriptor 8: Contaminants in Posidonia oceanica
AmbjentThis dataset includes the concentration of contaminants in sediment and Posidonia in marine waters as monitored under the EMFF 8.3.1 Project. The monitoring was undertaken in line with Malta's monitoring factsheets for the MSFD Directive. -

National Designated Areas (NatDA)
AmbjentThe NatDA formerly known as the Common Database on Designated Areas (CDDA) is more commonly known as Nationally designated areas, and is one of the agreed Eionet priority data flows maintained by EEA with support from the European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity. It is a result of an annual data flow through Eionet countries. In fact, Malta, being a member of the EEA, submits this report on an annual basis to fulfill this requirement. The EEA publishes the data set and makes it available to the World Database of Protected Areas (WDPA). The NatDA data can also be queried online in the European Nature Information System (EUNIS). -
Natura 2000 - Biotopes
AmbjentThe submission of sites to the EC entails the preparation of a datasheet and a map for each site, that is for each proposed SCI and for each SPA, unless a proposed SCI has the exact boundary as an SPA; in the latter case only one datasheet is prepared comprising all relevant information. Reference can be made to the Natura 2000 viewer - including datasheets (link: http://natura2000.eea.europa.eu/) and to the Natura 2000 database (link: http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/natura-2000/) to obtain information on each Natura 2000 site for almost all of the EU Member States. Information for the sites nominated by Malta are also available through these same links. -
Natura 2000 - SCIs
AmbjentNatura 2000 is a network of protected areas across the European Union, with the aim of affording protection to habitats and species of wild fauna and flora of Community interest. Conservation and management measures have to be established and implemented to ensure that the condition of the natural habitats and species for which the protected areas have been designated, is maintained and/or restored, in order to ensure their long-term survival/existence.
